I know what you are saying about old parts vs. new. My clutch is the original, with 157K city miles over 17 years. I've been told that a replacement might not last but one quarter that time.

When I was wrenching on Kawasaki motorcycles years ago, the service manual said, like you, "If motor runs, why tune?"
well if it comes apart and takes the radiator with it than youll wish you had replaced it when needed the tow bill will likely be 10 times more than the clutch

Fan clutch on these things seem to last about a decade or so. It should spin with little resistance when cold, and be extremely difficult to move when hot. When properly heated the fan itself should make a roaring noise on account of all the air it's moving.

Without the shroud the fan isn't pulling anywhere near as much air as it should through the rad. Hit up the JY for another one

Well....there IS a difference between keeping things right, within specs, and and tossing good parts in the trash. I dress and set the dual points in my 75 Honda 750 at least every 2 years, and gap the plugs in my Jeep every February. (when I change the oil)

Sorry to hear you had that happen! That's the first I've heard here.

We couldn't find the metal tube locally....had to be ordered. A brass 3/8" MNPT X 5/8" hose barb nipple from just about any hardware store works perfect. The 5/8" heater hose needs to be a little longer.
Kinda difficult getting to this when all put together aint it ?

Thanks for the heads up on the shroud Radi
I just ordered one mine has been broke since last fall and I've been having heat issues when sitting idle.

A brief question, related to your shroud issue: my 2000 XJ is missing the shroud on the LEFT fan (when facing the engine, from the front of the car). I'm guessing the two shrouds are different? If so, how do I differentiate them when looking for a replacement part?

They are refferring to mechanical fan shroud and is the one available separately. The driver's side has the electric fan and is fan with shroud as one assembly.
