Default Check Engine for Speed Sensor

Has anyone had any issues with speed sensors?
Are there any tricks to replacing them?

Let me also add the only thing i am currently noticing is the dummy light. no trans shifting issues.

Which Code do you have?? Theres more than one speed sensor, and depeneding year you would either have a cable or electronic speed sensor. Since yours is 2000 it would be electronic

The one on the driver side (Big one on Bottom) might be tricky depending how you try and remove it. Its connected to an adapter housing which holds in your speedo gear. The small one on top is unbolt pull and place new one in.. That easy.

Do you know which sensor it is?? Im getting code P0500 for VSS. But i dont have a speedo gear installed so i dont get a reading on my speedometer.. keep tearing up the gear

the code is P0701 for speed/range sensor. not entirely specific. I only found the small sensor on top. there are actually two on top that look exactly the same.

Alldata doesn't show a P0701 code for a 2000 jeep cherokee.

If you have a gear driven VSS and it keeps wearing out the gear you need to check for two problems....

1 - take the speed sensor out of the trans and make sure that it turns free.

2 - check the case bushing and the extension housing bushing.

Ok, ill check those.. but i did have the tail housing apart along with the speed sensor rotor and speed drive gear.. i took them to the trans shop with the tail housing and VSS's and they informed me that it wasnt neccasry to replace the adpater, he said it was fine. I have the new gear in my jeep just nervous about putting it in and tearing it up again.. but jeep drives fine without it.. Its just for the gauge the other output sensor is what communicates with the ECU..

I will check those again to make sure its good.. I will be posting a short vid on my install so i can get input from you guys on if i did it correctly and if the gear sits properly in the adapter case..

Seems like most jeepers get Codes P0700 and P0705 which are similar to your situation but i havent found the answer yet.
