Default Check engine and oil light 2000 Cherokee

Hey all,

So I changed my oil about a week ago. The previous place that did it for me tightened the oil filter too much so I couldn't get it off. I drained the old, added new. Now my check engine light popped on yesterday and my oil pressure light (idiot gauge) is coming on.

Some info:
-Oil seems to be full.
-Head, water pump, thermostat replaced 09/2015
-Radiator and altenator replaced 8/2016
-245,000 mi

Just bought a code reader, waiting for it to get sent to me but I have to use my Jeep to get to and from work, 25mi and 2000ft elevation gain, so I'm hoping to get a solution from you all. Any info helps!

Thanks!!

Check the connector to the oil light sending unit near the filter for looseness or corrosion. The sending unit may have gotten damaged when replacing the filter. Easy to do.

Would that cause the engine light to go on as well?

I just checked it and it seems to be ok. Super old. Just ordered a new sender, I figure I'll replace it anyway.

Just broke mine on my 98 but the only gauge to come on was a red "check gauges" light. Check engine light did not come on.

Funny, I answered this as you were typing. Just replaced mine on Wednesday. My CEL did not come on.

1. If the new oil pressure sending unit doesn't resolve this, you will need to temporarily install a "mechanical oil pressure gauge" where the oil pressure sending unit resides. Then you will know for sure if your oil pressure is within spec. This gauge can often be rented from your local parts store.

The oil pressure spec for the 4.0 is as follows:

*Not under 13 psi at HOT idle
*Between 37-75 psi over 1600 rpms

2. Your check engine light is not likely related to your oil pressure gauge issue. Once you get your code reader, hook it up and pull the codes and post the EXACT codes here for comment, not just a description. With OBDII codes, the devil is definitely in the details.

The check gauges alert system is separate from the check engine light.

If you have abnormal oil pressure or an issue with your oil pressure sending unit, your "check gauges" light will come on or your oil pressure gauge will read incorrectly, but the check engine light will NOT come on. That is for emissions and other issues.

Thank you! I will post them as soon as I get it!

Supposedly there are two codes related to an oil sending unit/circuit problem. P0522 and P0523
