Default check engine light getting pretty annoying

Ive had a check engine light on in my 98 for way to long. The local autoshop says that the code is reading a problem with the torque converter. The transmission had some problems in the last year so I took it to a well know transmission shop and had the entire thing rebuilt. The jeep drives and shifts perfectly now. The problem is, the check engine light keeps coming on saying there is something wrong with the torque converter. Both the lead guys at both shops have spoken about this problem with each other now because ive been in and out of both shops alot in the last year. They believe the problem is the computer in the jeep cant get a good reading because im running 35s and the only way to stop the light from coming on, is to put smaller tires on or have the computer recalibrated. is this true or whats going on?

what for? I cant take apart or mess with the light. Im in California and they are crazy about messing with stuff. If you disconnect the light, it wont pass smog.

i dont think this is uncommon. and really, is it worth trusting this little bastard anyways? if you like wheelin then a good set of gauges is probably a safe investment. imo, if something so catastrophic was happening under the hood, the other gauges would telling me, and i have a felling like there would be some physical signs as well. like i said before, just e-tape over it, get into your dash and unplug it, or take the tiniest drill bit available and pop the thing... or stress over actually doing it right. your call
ugh, cali is so chill on some stuff... why not the jeeps...

I totally agree and i wish i could take every electronic thing out of it but the smog thing is the issue im facing so im somewhat forced to do it right. I could care less if its on all the time, but since i drive it quite often, gotta be able to smog it. thanks for the ideas though, If i ever turn this into a pure trail rig, i will for sure be taking that light out first thing.

You could just try reseting the ECU... maybe something changed recently and the ECU just thinks it's abnormal. Worth a shot... it's free and takes less than 3 minutes:

thats interesting, never heard of that. It says at the top of that page on the link that it is for a 93 grand cherokee...wonder if it is the same. I might have to try it.
