oh thats a great idea, never would of that of that, thank you! i also thought about re-threading the peice the nut screws onto just a little bit smaller then it is now and getting a smaller nut so its a tight fit again but i dont know if that would be good, i will try the shim idea for sure though.

so i tried getting it off again today, but no luck. i sprayed some more wd40 and used shims like Radi had said to do, but there was not much room at all to have a shim on each side. after i gave up i tightened everything back up and the engine light went off but for only a mile or two. if i spray something like pb blaster on and wait a few days, will it really make the difference and get it off? running out of ideas here and id really like to get this thing cleaned up, but if i cant, whats the second best thing to do? what effect will clearing the code and forgetting about it have?

PB Blaster is one one of the best things to use on a Jeep, I've never had luck with WD-40, but to help break the NSS loose, try rapping on it GENTLY with a brass hammer. Don't ask me why but the gentle rapping with PB Blaster works magic on stubborn fasteners.

Any luck on this problem? I have replaced the NSS checked my fuses fixed my reverse lights with a fuse into 18 had it scan it comes up with the evap purge (i replaced) and the p0705. It looks like the those two (evap purge and range sensor) are on the same fuse. My next guess is the PCM.

Gear selection is the only NSS function monitored by OBD. If you are getting a CEL, it's that section that has failed...not the ignition lockout or reverse lights. They are separate switch sections. Ignition and reverse lights can work fine and still have a failed switch.

Pinout below for the switch logic.
Check the wiring and connectors for damage, dirt or bad connections. Then shift into 3 and then 1-2 and see if you have continuity (no resistance) between the appropriate connector terminals.
I only have 7 pins. I'm missing "a" on both ends. Am I supposed to have it? It's a 98 Cherokee xj

Yes, mine looks like that....
I'm trying now to find it in the FSM to figure which pin is which.
My connector housing has numbers molded into it, not letters...

As an aside, can anyone tell me the trick to finding which connector is which in the FSM?
I am so sick of reading through each connector to find the one I'm looking for... There has got to be a trick to this...

Here's a link to a forum post that gives the pinouts for the gray connector...

Yes,

there is a section towards the end of the Electrical Chapter that is conveniently titled "Connectors" It has a picture of every one

To make things even more convenient, I have found the "Index" Chapter (near the beginning of the the '95 FSM) is very detailed, and directs you to what you want to find

For some reason, the later year models, I am not sure how to find the Index, (but I dont need to)
