Default Check engine light on

check engine light came on my 98 xj while driving on hi way. i have tried all the key dances 3 on 4 on 5 on nothing comes up on the odm. some people say it cant be done on 98 and later models but i have seen it done on a 98 99 2000. the dash diagnostic works when i hold the odm reset and turn key 3 times then let go of reset but no trouble code. maybe someone can help me?
thanks

The OBD-II specification is made mandatory for all cars sold in the United States in 1996.
You need a code reader to scan for the codes.

OBD2 scanner.

You absolutely cannot pull codes using the odometer trick on anything newer than mid-1997 for the XJ. All you get is the odometer self-test when you try it.

Some other Jeep products other than the XJ allowed you to do this for a longer period of time before that luxury went away.

You will need either a code reader or a scan tool to pull codes on your 98. No other way. Some parts stores like Autozone will read the codes for you for no charge.

Once you get the codes, post them here for comment and advice. Post the entire code, not just a description.

You didn't see it on a Jeep that is for sure!!! Just take it to just about any chain parts store they will pull the codes for free.

Get the codes and find out FOR SURE whats wrong. Usually the lowest number code is causing the others, if there are more than one. We cant do ANYTHING to help until we know the codes.
