2001 xj, check engine light is on, meaning it isnt going to pass smog (auto fail in CA). my 91 xj I can check codes by turning the key on and off multipile times. is there a way to do this with the 2001 as well?

Unfortunately with a 96 and later being OBD-II, you'll need a scanner or code reader. Cheap ones are around $50 or the local parts store will check codes for free but don't buy anything just because there's a code.

Jake, if I recall correctly, '01 has a turnkey trick that displays the code on the digital odometer.
Programbo, it will still show a code when they plug in the reader. I tried that

I believe you can get the codes on an 01 by turning the key on while pushing the odometer reset button. Unless you clear the CEL with a code scanner after repairs are made, you will still fail your emissions check.

It's probably a cylinder 3 misfire due to the heat soak problem with the 00-01 XJs have go to a autozone or something and have them reset it and if it's that code that's what it is you have to either wrap your entire fuel bar in heat resistant crap or get some hood vents or program the computer to allow the fan to run for about 5-6 min after you park it so that you don't get that misfire when you come back to get in your car after you've done some errands

No way to get the codes on an 01 using any trick. That luxury went away mid-year 1997. Pressing the odometer button sequentially will only get you a systems "self-test".
You'll need either a code reader, a scan tool, or as mentioned take your XJ to a parts store like Autozone where they will read it for free.
Post the exact code (not just a description) here for comment if you are so inclined....
