My pops has a 2001 XJ and his Check Engine Light just came on. He got online and found out how to check for codes, and said that it wasn't giving him any error codes. He then disconnected the battery, re-connected the battery and so far it has stayed off. Any ideas what might be causing it to come on?

worth every penny
I had the light on a couple months ago on my 01 too. It was the misfire in cylinder #3, which is common. I cleared the code and it never came back on. It happened while i was 4wheeling. Moisture in the injector or something like that...nothing big.

Thanks guys. He cleared the code by disconnecting the battery. If it comes back on I'll tell him to take it in and get it checked on the OBDII.

Check the gas cap. My wifes Malibu does that if it is not on tight enough and it doesn't throw a code. My dad's Caravan did the same thing.

Chryslers don't need a obd-I reader.. Key on/off three times...
But to answer your entire question.. maybe... Depends on whether you can match the plug or not. The different manufacturers all had differing plugs on their OBD-I plugs. With a GM you could actually short two pins in the connector and not even need a reader.

Both are OBD-II. ODB-II came into use for the '96 model year. So yes a single scanner will work for both. The HF one linked earlier would do the job.
I have an older Actron scan tool... works great. But they don't offer this model anymore.
