Hello im new to this forum so let me start by saying Hello!


aaand here we go.... I just bought this 1991 Limited Jeep Cherokee for 700 bucks! came with a 4 1/2" lift, 33" tires, and an over heating problem(fixed with a new thermostat) blah blah blah. well after i got it towed home i drove it around a little more to figure out it wont go about over 55MPH!!!! once i hit the highway to it just looses all power and wont cruise over 50 and just looses all speed/power till i stop again. I can go around town on the backstreets just fine it shifts(doesnt skip around from gear to gear), it doesnt make Any weird noises shifting, no clanks no bangs........ im hella confused i dont understand whats wrong with it at all and i dont think the tranny is going out?! i got told it might be the computer? who knows??... Please Help!!!!!!!

 

o ya the engine sounds fine to when going down the highway... it also sounds like it was shifting between 3rd and 4th when i first hit the highway. but it finally stuck with 4th b4 i hit the hill and lost all power.

 

could be a plugged fuel filter ( cheap part) or a plugged catalyst converter (not cheap part) both can give you the symptom you described

Change your fuel filter. If that does not solve the problem disconnect the exhaust before the cat and drive it and see if it goes above 55.

 

If Fuel filter and cat are OK. Doubt it is the computer, itself, more likely sensor. It might be the CPS getting ready to fail, or the wire is shorting on something. somebody will post who has had the same symptom.

well.. its not the fuel filter nor the exaust. now im getting a check engine light on!! see the funny thing is once it comes on i know my jeep will start up... what do I use to check to see what is causing the check engine light to come up?
