Default charging system

so i was deiving and all of the sudden it stoped charging and non nessesary thing start going out an then of course the engine farts and i am on the side of the road asking for a jump and then it decides to charge again. it stops charging randomly (bout once a week give or take) i was thinking voltage regulator is craping out since it will charge fine mosty and i do have two twelves bumping in the back and lights on the top so it does have some strain most of the time it does fine. so i cracked the altenator open and i cant find it. i originally thought it was the rediculous relay due to a starting problem as well but it remained. now i am just just scratching my head any one have any ideas?

it is my first jeep so i dont know to much bout jeeps but i love it and plan on making it a project ut i got to fix the basics first

specs:
1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, 4x4, automatic (unfortunatly), inline 6

1. Be sure serpentine belt is tight. It is what powers the alternator.

2. There isn't a lot to the actual charging system. So primary suspects are the alternator and the voltage regulator.

the belt is tight and and i just had the altenator checked twice and the guy says the voltage regulator is in the altenator but i can not find it but it passed both times with flying colors so i am still looking i have got eveything pulled apart right now searching for a lead originally i thought it was the relay that everything goes through but i replaced that and still it remains

i know the belt is not loose but i have been reading and half of the people say that the voltage regulator is integraded in the computer and half say it is in the altinator in a 1990 xj i opened up my altenator and i did not see the voltage regulator then i looked at the part on auto zones and i cant find that part any where i checked my grounds and leads, i have tested the altenator twice, tested the battery, and tightened thebelt just to rule it out the altenator bearings spin good. i have no clue what is left and it is hard to tell if i have fixed the problem because it only happens every once in a while but happens to often to drive it in town
