Default Charging problem

I’ve got a 1997 Cherokee with the 4.0 and can’t figure out the charging on it was having a problem when you turn the lights or something on it would drain the battery so I put a new alternator on it and still have the same problem but now the windshield wipers stay on has any body had the same problem

Just discovered that could be a bad battery cell.
No idea about the wiper issue.

to test your alternator charging:
Take a digital voltmeter and with the engine off, measure your battery voltage. You need to have 12.4 Volts minimum.
Next, start your engine and measure your voltage again over the battery posts. It should increase.

Now. With engine running, switch on all things that demand juice. Like stereo, headlights, wipers, A/C....all except your window defroster. Raise the rpms to about 1500-2000 and measure the voltage again. It should now read at least 0.5Volts higher than engine off voltage.

Let us now what you got and it can be taken from there. You can also measure voltage output in the alternator but that's for later.

Have your battery tested, including CCA. Bad battery is easy to overlook.

See how you go with this

I would suggest you take the battery out and have it tested. If there is a bad cell, or just almost worn out, then they will be able to tell. The 97 has charging controlled by the ECM. It is also common to have that function fail while the rest of the ECM remains functional
