I have a 2000 xj with the 4.0 engine. The owners manuel is long gone, but I NEED to change the automatic tranny fluid. How do you do this and how many quarts do I need? Any advise would be appreciated.

Well I drained mine with the bolt at the bottom like the oil pan then added 6 quarts but there is still like 4 in ur touqe converter but I don't know how with out pulling the tranny off

use dex III and its easy. take off the bolt on the transmission pan and let it drain. you can change the filter if you want, that will require dropping the pan. how many miles since last change? i think i used 2 and a half quarts just draining the fluid and putting back in. an overhaul of the entire system will take more fluid but i doubt you are going to do that. the way i did it was drain and fill up and drive three times, changed the filter on the last time and called it good.

6 quarts drained? maybe i was wrong but i remember it was like 2 and a half quarts. im probably wrong

There is a drain plug on the pan. If you drain just the pan fluid out, you will get between 3-4 quarts to drain out.

Use Dex/Merc III compatible fluid. Be very careful NOT to overfill when you fill it back up. Overfilling is not good for a transmission. Exercise the transmission and with a hot engine, check fluid on level ground. Add a very small amount at a time as a little bit brings the level up on the dipstick quickly.

Thanks, the Advance Auto parts print out states 4 qts, I hope this is accurate. Where do you fill the transmission fluid from? I heard that I may need a pump get it to the tranmission.

Fill thru the dip stick tube.

I blew my tranny line and that drained about 4 quarts from my 99 xj, tranny was seconds from burnin up, anyway, after it drained I put 4 quarts of Dex II in its been great ever since

I've drained and refilled mine several times. In my experience, when pulling the plug and draining the pan, it takes a little less than 3 qts. to refill.

I just did mine for the first time last night, took 3 quarts of Dex III to top it back off. I did the transfer case as well, slightly more than 1.5 quarts of Dex III in that.

Wow, draining a transmission and refilling it threw the dipstick, sounds pretty simple...My local repair shop gave me a $200 estimate for this.

I have a friend that has a shop with a tranmission fluid change machine. I buy a case of Dextron IV, and flush it really good. I do this every two years since I bought it in '03. I know everyone here says not to use Dextron IV, but I have been using it for 8 years in my '98 XJ with no problems. I don't think I should switch back at this point. The machine does flush everything, but paying to have it done isn't cheap.

I just changed my tranny filter and fluid. It took 4 quarts with the filter change. I bought one of those 4 quart Dexron III. It's cheaper than buying the individual quarts.

What's the best way to fill the tc?
