Default Changing head unit....how to get dash panel off?

Hi

This might be a dumb question but I want to change the head unit in my 98 XJ. I was feeling around the panel on the dash and I didn't feel any screws that might be holding it on. Does it use those plastic trees to hold it on?

I thought I'd ask before hand so I don't just start yanking and break something.

TIA

Im not sure about your year but on my 87 there was some screws around the gauges and the rest were just clips.

Its just held in with clips, start at the bottom and just pull on it, it pops right off.

Thanks...yeah, I've always owned like 91's (this is my first step up to a "newer" Jeep). I did the head units on all the others and removed like 6 screws and the panel came right down.

You can only imagine my surprise when I didn't find a single screw anywhere on this one :-)

Thanks for the reply

Thanks DR

That's what I thought but figured I'd ask. Here's to some bangin' Sony X-plode sounds.

YEAH!!! That's when I'm planning on doing mine too. They're forecasting rain so I figure I can do that without getting too wet.

For now I'm just gonna bring the RCA's and the remote turn on down near the bottom of the dash. When I get around to installing the amp and sub, I'll worry about routing those cables then.

Good luck. Hopefully we won't be feeling each others pain!!

I've got a '94 right now, and have had an '87 and a '90 previously, and they were just bolted in, and the problem I always had was getting the darn thing over the steering column, don't know if there's a trick for that or not, but every time I did it I thought I was gonna wind up busting the dash panel bending it to get it out and over the steering column.

I was always afraid of that too, and I am not going to do it that way anymore myself because I just repainted the steering column and I don't want it scraping paint off with it. About the easiest way to avoid it would be to remove the bottom portion of the dashboard and loosen the two nuts holding the steering column up to the dash. Not remove them completely, but just loosen then enough to slide the dash panel right out.

Well I did the install last night rather than wait for today. Everything went excellent. The Metra bezel fit like a glove. The dash panel came off (and more importantly, went back on) no problem. I did hit a little hurdle with the wiring adapter. The one that was spliced on the radio was a one piece for an older XJ, but son of a gun, if I didn't find the correct 2 piece (brand new) in my garage. SCORE!!!!!!

Ran the drop for the remote turn on and the RCA's out under the dash just waiting to be finished.

All in all.....A most excellent adventure.
