Default Tranny flush vs Tranny Fluid Change

I think my '91 XJ has started to drip just a tad from the tranny pan; nothing major, just a drop or so when I park it and I dont think the gasket or filter has been changed.. PO isnt exactly the best mechanic on my list. He had bad maintenance on this thing. Anyway, I figure I should be able to do this, but someone told me about transmission flushes. I have heard they can be bad. I have almost 200k miles on the drivetrain and I dont know if the tranny fluid has ever been changed or flushed. What should I do here?

Pay the $100 for a full transmission flush

or

Buy a filter and gasket, drain the fluid and drop the pan myself and replace the gasket and filter, and just top it off, drive for a week, and repeat?

I would just change it,if you flush it you could stir up crud and cause more problems. Not knowing its serviceing record your better off.

That's what I figured. How hard is it to change tranny fluid? Is it just open a drain plug, let it drain, then top it off?

What does the fluid look like now is it colored etc. If you dont history I would change fluid and the filter especially with 200k on it according to Haynes manual approx. 4qts. when draining pan and changing filter

to do it right, i would change 2 to 3 times. see when you change it your only changing about 3.5 qts. there is still about 5 qts in the system that you cant get out.

That's a good trick. My favorite part of the video is the clean white Hawaiian shirt, he must be skilled mechanic not to get that thing dirty....
