for 33s it'd probably be smarter to go up to 4.10s or 4.56s

I would shop around. Go to pirate4x4, and pm some vendors with your needs. There is also Naxja... PM the vendors. Look at spending around 5-600 for gears, master installs, and carriers.

To me since you are changing to stock ratio.. I would hunt PnP's. On half price weekend you could pick up a rear 8.8 and front d30 for around 200. Spend a few bucks reconditioning and have new stronger/better axles. Did I mention you will save at least 500 in labor for the gear install.

Question I am looking into running 30s or maybe 31s. I have a 1989 stock gears (dunno what stock gears are). Will I be ok with stock? Also what is the gear in a stock jeep?

Typical stock gears are 3:55 unless you have the 4cyl. 4:10 i think came in those. If you plan to run 30's stock gears are fine. (Running those myself with stock set up)

If you want to do something temporary on the cheap either get a D30/29 spline ChryCo 8.25 in 3.55 or 3.73(if you can find one, they reside in factory tow package XJs) form. Idk but there is a possibility of finding that same set-up with 4.10 gears out of a 4cyl

If your going to spend the $ to regear go to 4.10s.
For the rear you should be able to pick up a 8.8 with LS, disc brakes and 4.10s for under $250. (carpart.com)
That would get you a stronger axle, the proper gearing and disc brakes for less than what youd pay for parts and someone to regear yours...
The disc brakes alone are well worth the swap.

The only prob I see with the Ford 8.8 is that (1) you will have a axle that is 1.25" narrower than the stock axle so maybe spacers? (2) If you put that in your xj you will need to weld new mounting points for your suspension not something for beginners ps dont forget to change your front gaer ratio to match otherwise your transfer case eill have a bad bad day

Hope this helps

Does your XJ have Anti-lock Brakes?

If you get a Ford 8.8 will its ABS hook up to the XJ's. If not do you leave it disconnected, Take it out or what??

as far as mounting points go all you have to do is spring perches on the axles, the hard part of that is making sure you have the right pinion angle, but thats not that many welds just hope you weld well enough so that you kno that they are strong

I'm just curious... what is the special tool required to install ring and pinion sets?
