Changed the TPS and all hell broke loose
I ordered a new Throttle Position Sensor for my 2001 XJ limited... I cleaned the IAC and changed the TPS. The plug-in clip was very tight on the new TPS but managed to get it on finally. Then i flashed the ECM, started it up and it shot up to around 2000 rpm, eventually settling around 1-1200 rpm for an idle speed... I figured the ECM is learning again so I took it out for a test drive and it won't shift right. Stays in each gear till I get it up to around 4000+rpm then shifts. I also felt a drag on it like it was in low or 2nd the whole time... NOT GOOD, It wouldn't even hit overdrive on the highway at all.
So, I get home, let it sit for a few hours, then start it up, took it for another drive and same things happening. So I went ahead and put the old TPS in and everything returned to normal. Now, could I have possibly had the wrong TPS? Is there a difference between and automatic transmission TPS and a manual?
I'm stumped..
I ordered it from Quadratec and it said it was for a 2001 cherokee 4.0.. - http://www.quadratec.com/products/55123_02.htm

that is what they look like. did you mate the part inside to the TPS(there is a piece that goes inside that hole)? it should pop up a little from the hole until you get the screws in.
I just changed mine tonight.

That will let you know for sure what's going on. You can get em for 10$ at harbor freight. They were just running a deal if you spend 20$ you get one free. They have a set of 3 3 jaw pullers for 20$ :-D

I also have an IAC and a MAP sensor on the way from Rusty's.. they may be here tomorrow but I'm not going to mess with them till I get the TPS situation resolved.. I'm planning to renew most of the sensors now.. I plan on keeping this XJ for years and years ..

It's not strange at all for the trans to act up with tps problems. That's on point. Besides telling the ecu the position of the throttle plate the tps also sends info to the tcu (transmission control unit) that tells how much the throttle is open and helps it know when to shift. Definitely malfunctioning. It's not your trans don't worry lol

I wonder if it's possible that somehow I had the TPS hooked up wrong, I've seen other people on a google search report the same thing after putting in a new one - surging, high idle and transmission shifting weird.. I'll mess with it more tomorrow and tell you all how it went

Adjustment procedure I found. Maybe Automatic has something similar?
TPS Adjustment Procedure - 4.0 Liter Engine With Manual Transmission
TPS Adjustment Procedure - 4.0 Liter Engine With Manual Transmission
- Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
- Do not remove the electrical connector from the TPS. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to terminal A and the negative lead to terminal B of the TPS connector (Figure 1). The leads must be inserted through the back of the connector to make contact with the terminals. The terminal identification letters are molded into the connector.
- with the throttle plate in the closed position, note the "input" voltage. It should be approximately 5.0 volts.
- Remove the voltmeter positive lead from terminal A and connect it to terminal C. The "output" voltage should be 0.8 volt (16% of input voltage). If this is not the case, continue with this procedure.
- Adjust output voltage as follows: with the voltmeter leads still attached, carefully loosen the sensor mounting screws and slowly rotate the sensor until the output reading is 0.8 volt with the throttle closed. Then, tighten the sensor mounting screws securely. Be sure not to disturb the sensor's position while tightening the screws. Adjustment is now complete.

That's for renix. You should not have adjustment on your tps. Oh should have one three wire connector. Think the voltages are the same... any late model guys want to chime in?
