I know for my '01 it's a bolt on, so it's very simple to remove or put a new one on.

before you replace it get under there and make sure its rattling from the inside not just a hanger or something else rattling but if its rattling inside the cat when you bang on it chances are the insides have broken loose and it is time for a new one before you have to smog again

If it's just to stop rattling don't waste your money. Only replace the cat when your rig tells you to unless you want a performance cat. Like the precious poster said. Go under your rig and move everything around it could just be something came loose.

Rattling generally comes from one of two things:

1. The catalytic converter itself is breaking down internally. Best to replace the converter, or it may eventually clog to the point where it screws with your exhaust backpressure. You can find an inexpensive replacement; this is one of those things that you do not want to buy at the Jeep dealership!!

2. The "heat shield" on the converter can break loose and rattle. Check this out first.

Walker makes a good aftermarket direct bolt on and it's an 1/8 of the stealership price
