For future reference, discussing the removal of the catalytic converter on this website is actually in violation of forum rules, seeing as how in most states removal of the cat is illegal.
So my $.02 is take it to a muffler shop and have it replaced with O.E equipment.

My mistake, your description was kinda vague & the title confused me a little.
As far as trying to get the pipe to fit snugly and clamping it, thats slim to none chances of working. However, most good auto parts stores actually sell small 3" long pieces that are specifically contoured to connect 2 same sized pipes, they have like a male end on each side, so to speak.
That, with some exhaust sealer, and exhaust tape, then clamp onto the tape, might do the trick.
Sorry again for the mis-understanding. Good luck.

I would think the repair would be just temporary. You need to weld a permanent piece in place for any long term solution.
And as stated any discussion of cat removal is a violation of forum rules.
