Question Can someone school me on the evap system? (97+)

I've been working on a lot of different rust repairs on my XJ, and last night I went to finally remove the steel line coming from the fuel pump assembly into the evap canister. It easily split in half, and I realized that the fuel-pump side attached with a rubber grommet, which I accidentally pulled out completely. I suppose that means I'll be dropping the tank completely to hook the new line up (which is fine, going to replace fuel pump module while I'm at it).

Here's the dilemma. I need to back my Jeep into the garage instead of pulled in as it sits now. Would I be able to temporarily run the Jeep with that line missing? Looking at the FSM, it seems that it may cause a big vacuum leak and definitely throw a code for evap system leak. But will it have any ill effect on running the engine, or produce toxic fuel vapors in the area around the leak?
