Default Can the pinion yoke be skimmed back?

So I'm rebuilding my D35 who's pinion big bearing failed and have found this.

I could get it skimmed back for a fraction of the cost of new so can you and what would be the limit to go down to if anyone knows.

The part number for this one is 83503318.

Thanks

IDK for sure, but I think there is a stainless steel sleeve that fits over the seal area to repair them.

In the colonies a new yoke is 33 bucks (about 1.25 hogsheads, or whatever you guys use over there).

They seem to make a Speedi-Sleeve for everything EXCEPT Dana 35.

IMO this might be one of those jobs you don't want to do twice.

Yes there is a thin metal sleeve that goes over it for about $40. In all honesty you would be better off just getting a new one for about the same money. Sleeves are available at shops specializing in bearings and belts

Pretty tough to chuck that up square in a lathe.

Agree, the speedi-sleeve is almost the cost of replacing the yoke. I looked up the yoke a few weeks ago, and it was $42 on Amazon. I still need to pull mine to replace the seal, and suspect it's going to look like yours. Last time I replaced the seal many years ago, the new seal rode in a different spot, so I didn't replace it.

What you can do is clean off the seal a little better with wet/dry sandpaper (400 grit and 1000 grit) and using WD40 as a lubricant to carry the dust away. Clean up the ridge as best as you can. Even if the ridge (groove) is still there, just try to work the micro-pits out so the groove is smoother. You want to smooth them out so they don't abraid the new seal. Then, don't tap the new seal in all the way. Leave it maybe 1-2mm off the seat of the diff. Then the seal will ride on a different area of the yoke ...the part that is less worn. Plus, you'll have the ridge cleaned up better and smoother. Also make sure to buy a good quality seal with the inner lip that's ribbed ...sound wierd, but the good seals have light ribbing on the inside lip. I've done it a few times and it works.

The best option I can find for a replacement yoke is £48 which is about $61.

I agree that the price of a sleeve vs new isn't worth the hassle and it certainly isn't a job I want to have to revisit after a rebuild.

As for the idea of leaving the seal out slightly, due to the double inner lip, it would have to be positioned very precisely to avoid the grooves, even if smoothed out so back to the previous point, I wouldn't want to have to do it again.

I guess if there's no specs for skimming back, the best option is to just get a new one.

Thanks for everyone's input.
