can anyone tell what engine by this number?
I was told it was a rebuilt 95 4.0- Put it in my 99 Classic & things match pretty well, had to change a few minor things. Then, when trying to put the serp belt on, noticed that the belt was hitting the timing cover bracket. That means the engine used to have a carb right? It was redone because it did have a fuel rail but trying to figure out exactly what I have here.
Looks like the numbers on the side are: 106MX27 (the 2 could be a Z I guess)
Thanks for any help

There was not a carbed 4.0 ever in an XJ or a ZJ. There is a difference in the serp belt routing and power steering set up between a 95 and 99 though. do you have the horseshoe or log style intake manifold on the replacement engine? Post a pic of the engine if you can.

I'll have to get a pic when I get home. I've got the Haynes manual for 84 to 2001 & it just shows the one way for the belt to be run. It matches except going from the idler to p/s there's a timing bracket in the way. Is there an online pic of how the 95 4.0 should be run?

I wonder if its from a wrangler because in the wrangler Haynes is where I saw that the timing cover is on carb'd models only.

I ran into this when i installed an OBDI engine into an OBDII XJ. The timing covers are different with a tab near the timing marks on OBDI. Take a look at both of yours...
You can either swap the cover or grind the tab clear of the serpentine belt.
I just looked, i deleted the pics from my PB account and they dont show in a thread i posted them in. I might find the original copy on another pc later..

That's what I was planning for tonight is to grind that tab off. Just trying to piece together what engine this actually is.

There are really no differences in the blocks themselves- only in the parts you bolt onto it. There would be no reason to use the intake and accessories from the '95 engine, especially when installed into a '99.
At what stage are you? Is the engine in and running or is this a swap you're completing after someone else started it?
You best bet is to source all the parts needed to bolt onto the engine from a '99 XJ.

99 and up belt routing:
98 and down belt routing (Renix may be different):
In 1999 they moved from a fixed idler up by the AC compressor with a pivoting power steering pump to and adjustable idler/tensioner below the power steering pump. The horseshoe intake that Bustedback mentioned is 99+

Actually the top diagram is for '96+ and the lower is for '95 and earlier.
Kinda pointless since you should be using the '99 intake and accessories. If you can unbolt it then you should be swaping it with the newer parts.
