I believe I have bad lobes on cylinder 3/4, can I test this by pulling the pushrods and rocker arms off and the plug wire/injector plug, one cylinder at a time?
Or will the lifters just slap about and make more noise?

I'm trying to find the ticking my engine is still making, was considering cam, simply because I reused it from my previously blown engine, and it had a similar noise on and off and finally it became permanent.... I don't have a dial indicator to check exact measurements, I was just hoping to see if the noise would die out if the cylinder was dead

Why would you use a cam from a blown engine??
And have you tried changing your oil to something thicker or considered better oil?
And did you reuse the lifters from the blown engine? Because typically it's the lifters that cause ticking since they're sticky from miles of use.

The rods got cleaned and inspected, couldn't get new ones at my local store, so they are used again.
New lifters, oil pump, mains, and rods.

typically when a cam is worn out it is very obvious. pitted lobes, lobes that have a lot of material missing, were any of the old lifters pitted??? how did the cam bearings look in the JY block? how did the bearing surfaces look on the cam? you said that the a couple crank journals had grooves right? i know youre oil psi is good so that may not be the issue, but new bearings and bad crank dont always last very long... any metal in the oil?

OK. Sans a "new thread" on the issue. The 4.0 sometimes has a knock. I got a fair deal on mine, (actually bought for my Mom), partly because of a "rod knock". 140,000 miles later I'm still not sure it isn't! I don't hear anything under load though.
It does it more with spec oil but rarely with what I run. If you can post up a U-Tube video of what it's doing, there is a fair chance it will sound just like dozens of others I've seen here. Like hammer blows.
OK here's mine for a reference. I just passed 275K, runs supper, and get's 22MPG on the highway.

There is only one main bearing that deals with crank end play.

dflintstone- that sounds more like the typical aluminum piston rattle. i believe in the 97 and up 4.0s those used a specially coated piston to reduce the occurences of this noise. if it was a rod bearing or wrist pin it would have made an exit with in that 135 thousand or so miles youve put on it since.
the OPs has more of a rod knock to it present through out rpm band. im still betting that journal on the crank with the broken bearing.... he has a vif posted in his other thread still has engine noise.....

The most notable thing about the issue for me is that it isn't bad at cold startup, gets consistent once its warm, and is silent at 3k rpm.
