Default Camshaft sensor

I had a check engine light go off for a few hours and then it came back about a month later for another few hours and like two months after that for about a day. It hasnt come up for a good 4 months or so. I plugged the jeep up to the scanner (while the light was off) and i guess it saved the code and it was for a bad cam sensor. My auto teacher said its probably dying and i should replace it. But the code hasnt come up in a good while. I do have a bit of a rough and unsteady idle and my mpg's have seen better days.

The camshaft position sensor can be tested with a meter and a manual.

If you continue to set a code for it, test or replace it.

Unsteady idle can be caused by a few things. Some new NGK copper plugs might be a good thing for your 2000, as well as a thorough cleaning of both the throttle body and idle air control, as they get carboned up over time and miles......

Thanks for the info. Ill be testing the sensor soon. I just changed the plugs the to champion truck plugs and it seems to run better so we'll see what happens to the mpgs. Also already cleaned the tbody and iac. Helped a bit. Engine stumbles the slightest bit after i turn it off. Does thos indicate anything? Cam sensor possibly?

Trust the code. If it codes for a cam sensor, you HAVE an issue with your cam sensor circuit.

A problem with the circuit?!?! Is there anything else that can be bad besides the sensor?

x2 the computer sensed a issue with it ,which will come back its better to replace it now instead of your xj dieing on the side of the road then all the added expense of towing missed work and so on...JM2CW

I just read something about aligning the cam sensor to the synchronizer because of it going out of of time due to the timing chain stretching. And that can be the cause of my intermittent code. Can someone explain to me what doing that entails?
