Default Camshaft position sensor

My check engine light is on and It says i have a defective camshaft position sensor. When I went to look at it i cant find it where it should be. So can anyone post some pictures of where it is? And would it be bad to drive it like this?

Look under the distributor cap on pre 2000 models, it's where the distributor used to be on post 2000 models.

*Always post the year/engine as there are significant differences along the way.

*Get yourself a service manual. They are invaluable for anyone even contemplating working on their XJ

*Post the EXACT code(s) here for advice, not just a description. With OBD codes, the devil is in the details.

Some people still call that part a pick-up coil. It's in the distributor under the rotor. On my '92, I had to completely remove the distributor and take it all apart. On the newer ones, I think it's a bit easier to get to.

See pic. 1999 XJ 4.0. It's the black disc under the rotor. Chrysler calls it a 'Switch Plate'. You can see the wires attached to the plate and coming out of the distributor to its connector.
