Default Camshaft movement

Hey guys so while removing my cam so I can swap it out since the helical gear was worn out I discovered the cam is moving to what I think is way too much. I’ve asked everyone I know and everyone is at a lost as to why the cam would move this much.
Has anyone seen something like this before?

On the engines prior to yours, there was no retainer. It was just a spring and button that rode against the timing cover. Whats on the back side of the retainer . Also is your head still on? You might be fighting the lifters/ spring pressure
