I need to change my rear end fluid in my '00 XJ. Like the title says it has an C8.25 in it according to the build sheet. When I went to Advance Auto and picked up a gasket I asked them what fluid I needed and they said 75-140 and asked if it was limited slip as there is an additive that must be put in if it is an LSD. Problem is, I do not know if it is or not. If I jack it up and turn one wheel the other does not spin unless I am turning it backwards and then the other wheel spins in the opposite direction... somethimes. Now if I put it in neutral and hand turn the drive shaft both wheels spin the same direction.

I was under the assumption that if it were LSD, spin one wheel and the other spins the opposite direction. Am I wrong here or do I have a bigger problem with my RD than what I realize?

Also if the XJ came from the factory with the towing package, AW4, cooler, C8.25 would it default to LSD or no?

 

The way you are testing it is correct to my knowledge but I do not remember which action means what lol. If your rig came stock with LSD there will be a sticker in your glove box stating that it is equipped with LSD and needs a friction modifier. I know it's not much help but it's a start lol.

 

So what fluid does everyone recommend? 80-90 / 75-140 / Something different? Regular/Synthetic? Put the LSD additive in regardless?

 

Unless you live where it is really hot most of the time, or pull a trailer go with the 75-90.
If you are unsure about having a LSD just add the additive, it will not hurt the diff either way.

 

Thanks, changed it out today. Used the 75-90 and put the additive in. I don't think the fluid has been changed... ever. It was dark black but the bottom of the differential was clear of any debris. I even ran a extendable magnet all around the inside, no bits or shavings and the bearings look good.

 

Do you remember what it looked like? left is no lsd, right is lsd.

 

WOW, I don't remember and it's going to bug me all night now...

 

You said you figured out which axle it was by the build sheet, the build sheet will also tell you if it has lsd.

 

If it does, I sure don't see it...

Nope, no LSD on the build sheet. Also your test results indicate that it's an open diff... Or at least it is now! With an LSD the wheels would have always turned in the same direction.
