OK so I decided today I would start looking at my A/C and see if I can make it work for cheap. I can't see spending a lot of $$ on it as I have about $1200 in the XJ right now including lift/tires and stereo. A/C never kicks in, clutch never engages. I was going to jumper it and see if I could kick it on manually- but need to know what wires to jumper. Was looking at it and looks like one wire was cut (and recently as the copper is still copper colored). Guy I got it from said the A/C worked last year - but he sold it because the PS went out badly- the PS bearings siezed up, shredding the fan belt. I am guessing the belt coming off cut the wire as it is right next to the pulley. Where should this wire go? I did not see anywhere it could go to but I started looking at the A/C on lunch so no creeper to get underneath.

There are two wires going to the compressor- one is bolted to the housing on the left side when facing the compressor standing at the front bumper- the other wire continues past the one that bolts to the A/C housing, but on mine it only goes another 1/2" then is cut off. I hope that made sense. There are two wires- one is attached to the compressor housing with a bolt, on the left side just behind the pulley. The other wire wraps around the front of the compressor, but on mine it is cut off about 1/2" after it makes the corner, under the A/C pulley.



Where should this wire go?

The wire 'screwed' to the housing is the ground wire. I don't understand why it doesn't ground through the compressor housing, but it is. The second wire is the 12 volt source that engages the AC clutch on the compressor. Note: if the compress cycles constantly, or won't cycle at all, check the pressure of the freon. It maybe be low. I will be working on the same project soon.

 

Where does the 12V power wire go? Mine is cut off and I could not see (or feel) the other end of the wire. Where does it enter compressor? If it is cut off flush like I am afraid then maybe I better start hunting for a JY compressor.
I was going to try and jumper the 12V wire to the battery and see if it kicks in, just to test and see if I need a new compressor, then check pressure and look for leaks. It may actually work other than the snipped wire. I've only had the Jeep 6 weeks and the PS pump went out right before I bought it...

That wire goes to the low pressure safety switch on top of your filter/dryer on the passenger side frame rail

 

I believe the wire in question is the Coil Lead Wire for the electric clutch for the compressor. Looking at the FSM, looks like it is a PITA to remove the clutch to replace the wire. I'm going to go to a shop and have them do a pressure test (free!)- if I have good pressure still I will see how much they want to repair the wire. If not I will start looking for a different compressor and finding leak(s)...
