it could mean a low charge. the system has a low pressure switch that will kick it off in low charge situations. it is in the suction line on the system. when running it pulls the freon in lowering the pressure (too low trips the switch) once the compressor is off the system equalizes and the switch closes to re-engage the compressor

you can buy freon without sealant. probably one can will be enough. i have never heard of the sealant gumming it up. you will need to know if it is r-12 or r-134. im not certain of the years of the switch to 134 but all newer cars are 134.

when filling it....this is a rough idea how to know when its full...if you feel the large line (suction line) near the compressor. it is full when you feel it get as cold and sweaty as a can of beer just pulled out of ice water. "beer can cold and good to go" be careful not to overcharge it. i hold the line as i charge it. it will go from cool to a steady flash of cold and stay that way. this is how i do it when i need a quick charge.

What setting do you have the switch on when it cycles on and off?
If it's on defrost, or the two farthest positions from off, it will cycle on and off like you are describing.
It's a longshot, but I thought I would remind you how defrost works. G/L
