As a master ASE certified technician who has been doing this for years. I have always charged with both valves open and the car off. If the car needs 2lbs and it only sucked in 1.70lbs I CLOSE the high side valve, as i states in my op, turn ON the car on max ac and the compressor will start to take the rest of the charge.

If you understand how guages work you can figure out why they say not to charge on the high side with the car on. And that's correct never open the high side with the car on. You can with the compressor off but not on.

Most would say you are doing it wrong.

Well I got bored today so I took the old compressor apart to see what happened. And this is the reason why it was no longer working.

Here is the compressor housing. I also kept the coil and clutch off the old one just in case I ever need it.

Excellent photos. Nice to see a complete thread with the problem and the solution all in one place. Wonder what exactly killed the old compressor? lack of oil? water in the system?
