Question A/C "Diverter" Question -- (*NOT* about Freon!)

Is there some kind of DIVERTER for air-flow in the a/c system?

Last week I thought my a/c had gone belly-up but what I discovered is that the blower, etc., seems to be fine and cold but is suddenly only blowing out of the windshield DEFROST VENTS, not the heating/a/c vents in the dash. And what's coming out of the defrost vents isn't even roughly enough cold air to cool down the Jeep.

It just seems logical that some kind of linkage broke to a diverter -- or whatever Jeep uses to switch from one set of vents to another -- but I have no idea where that diverter might be located or how to get to it.

Any help would be appreciated so thanks in advance.

From the 1999 Jeep Cherokee Factory Service Manual, "The mode control **** on the heater-only or heater-A/C control panel is used to direct the conditioned air to the selected system outlets. Both mode control switches use engine vacuum to control the mode doors, which are operated by vacuum actuator motors."

It's possible you are having vacuum trouble.

Blowing out the defrost only is a vacuum issue. There are "zillions" of threads on this. Try searching on "defrost only".

Check the vacuum reservoir behind the front bumper under the passenger headlight. Check the lines that run to/from it.
