1990 xj....blows warm and hard thru defrost
blows semi warm with little force thru dash vents
blows cool with little force thru floor vents

what gives?

we just bought this jeep for our son the other day. this is the only "real" issue we have.

its either the blower resistor or duct vents are falling apart or cut somewhere down the line. take the dash apart and see what you can find. a little duct tape will fix it.

when you put the blower on high is it loud?

ok...this just gets weirder. if the jeep is off for awhile then started the heat fan blows good thru the dash vents. switch to floor vents and they blow good. switch to defrost and everything is fine, but if i switch back to floor or dash vents it only blows out of the defrost.

Your mode (vents, defrost, etc.) is vacuum controlled. Check for vacuum leaks. There is a vacuum diagram here on the forum .... though darned if I can find it right now.
