'96 XJ here. I've noticed the auxilary elec. fan on my radiator only turns when the a/c compressor clutch wheel is spinning. Are they supposed to be tied together like that? And does this imply that the aux fan won't turn unless the a/c is on?

Disclaimer: The majority of my familiarity with the auxiliary fan is with OBDII, so I'm not 100% sure on this... someone correct me if I'm wrong. As I understand it, the A/C condenser (in front if your radiator) puts an extra thermal load on the cooling system, so your electric fan control is setup to run whenever your A/C clutch engages. It should also turn on when your engine temp reaches about 230°F, assisting the mechanical fan in passing cool air over your radiator.
