Default A/C compressor is going

I'm just looking for some opinions on buy a junk yard compressor or new. I'm kinda on a tight budget and just looking to see how many would buy one from a yard and if they did is there anything else that they would but with it? Thanks for you time and opinions.

Pitch it and move your alternator to that bracket.

^^ what Rich said.

My bud bought one rebuilt for his YJ off ebay i think, wasnt much more than $100 shipped. At that price it's not worth dumping $75 of oil and refrigerant in to find it's a junk compressor.

Kinda like owning a boat..

Are you sure it's the compressor and not a leak elsewhere in the system that is causing the compressor to not engage?

Go to autozone and you can get a refurbished compressor with the same warranty as a brand new one for a little under half the price of the new one, get the rewards card deal and you can get more money off from that...

I never thought of ebay so thanks for the idea. Codexj, there is no leak due to the fact that I had a set of gauges on it and the high side was a lot lower than what it is supposed to be. Bluedragon436, I priced it out from autozone and it waill cost me around 300 to 400 buck for the stuff. I may pick up one from ebay.

Are there any good tests to find exactly what the problem is? My A/C blew cold when I bought it, within a month it doesn't even work. I did notice while on, the compressor made a bit of an odd noise, hard to describe, like a droning kind of noise. A coworked mentioned the evaporator that's in the dash is known to leak and could be the problem too?

I would get a new one, but if money was tight and I was looking in the junk yard, I'd find one that was in a system that was still charged and looked like it was still in use before it was brought to the JY, maybe the vehicle was wrecked and shorten it's life. Problem is a lot of JY remove the refrig these days. I know the pick and pulls around here will sell you a guarantee for the used part.

I didn't even see a XJ compressor available at Autozone's web site but we replaced the one on our '98 XJ with one from Oreill'ys Auto Parts.......$200 for re-man, $222 for new.......3 guesses and the 1st 2 don't count as to which one we bought. Did this about 6 weeks ago. There's some things u just don't buy from a JY.

Have you added any R-134a, if you do get some with dye in it. It might reveal where the leak is, if not it could be in your evap.
