buying an xj question
Hey guys, I am looking at buying a 1988 cherokee for $500. Heres the guys ad:
"1988 jeep cherokee - $500
tires, lights, AC, brakes, radio, windows, body, okay. mileage 160,000. runs rough, will get you there. $500 obo"
He sayed it has the 4.0, standard, 4 door.
I asked him what he ment by " runs rough ", and heres what he sayed:
"motor starts right up but there is some wavering in power as you ride and sometimes motor quits at low to zero speed. uneven performance."
I would like to know what you think might be wrong, and if you think i shoud get it or not? thanks in advance.

for 500 bucks, you really can't go wrong. specially if the motor starts. It could be a bunch of things, as long as it starts, that means it has potential. hell, you can get an engine swap for those for nearly nothing from a junkyard. plus, it's probably a vacume hose issue.
for 500 bucks, get it (if it's in decent shape)
anywho, that's my $0.02

I think it is either the CPS or TPS. More likely TPS since it starts east prolly got wet and needs to be replaced.
Or he could be hiding a bigger problem, Take a look at it and tell us what you see as the problems, check the oil and see if there is coolant in it, make sure there is no oil in the coolant also.
Tell us what you find out, heck take a few pics.
Another thing rusted out XJ suck to work on. may want to take that into consideration. check it real good.
no rust and engine starts 500 bucks is a Awesome deal.

i'm with XJ. just make sure the rest of the thing is in decent shape... and it could be as simple as a bad fuel filter, to as complex as worn piston rings. like I said, for 500 bucks, don't even sweat it... just make sure the rest is fine, and go get it. take it to autozone, and get the basics... fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, change the oil... do the normal thing you do when you buy a used vehicle..
if it is still bad, take it to a local mechanic, and let them help you diagnose the problem.. it might be one of those little 3 letter acronyms that are like, 25 or 30 bucks to fix..
either way, it's a VERY fun vehicle, and it's worth the 500 bucks for sure...

My brother bought a $500 95 Sport from Craigslist. The owner said the tranny was bad and included a spare tranny in the deal. He got it home and put some fluid and Lucas in it and he's been wheeling ever since.
You can't go wrong with a $500 Cherokee!
