IMO, any cherokee you spend 10k on should be absolutely AMAZING. Cut your price in 1/2 to 1/3 and you can get a really nice one with low miles. What are your plans for it? Going under the assumption that you're going to dd it try to find one that hasn't been abused yet, so you can get to that later. Rust on rocker panels is common and may help with identifying how well the xjs been taken care of. Also check for oil leaks, some such as near the filter are common. Check the tcase and make sure it works, though if you want a 2wd cherokee...why? Also make sure the guages read what they should and give it a good test drive long enough to get it warmed up all the way at least. Also if you're searching online, posting here or on other forums what you're looking at will probably elicit responses on expected price so you don't get screwed over.

thanks for the quick reply.
i want to get a rough country 4.5 inch lift, 33'' tires, wheels, rock sliders, roof rack, skid plates, bumpers, air locking diffs, and eventually drop a 318 in there.
is it really important to get one with chrystler 8.25 axles instead of D35?

As far as I've read the 8.25 is generally considered better, but I'm definitely no expert. If you're going to go spend the money on air lockers I'd personally go all out with a regear and upgrade the axles so you don't have to worry so much about the 8.25/35 crappin out on yah. With the amount you have to dedicate to it I think you'd be alright to do that in addition to your other plans.
