Default Busted Automatic Transmision

Have a 89 jeep cherokee
When I put the car in drive. It seams to go straight to 3rd gear. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Possibly.

How does it shift if you pull the lever to 1-2, and then shift it up manually?

If it shifts that way, the first place to look is under the passenger side dash for the use for the Transmission Control Unit.

Thanks
Mine works when manually shifting 1-2 and does go into drive. However it will not change gear in drive.

Check the fuse and it's socket. With the key On, you should have power to both sides of the fuse.

While you're at it, do post 10 in my link below.

I tried what you suggested but I haven't noticed a difference. I have also unplugged the battery to reset the batter which didn't fix it either

check your throttle position sensor (TPS). you may need a new one or possibly just adjust yours.

You are gonna need to get your hands on a digital meter to do much with that Renix Jeep. (It's ECU has no memory Btw. "does not reset"). That TPS, check/adjust is a bit tricky, but you can get help here. (it has allot to do with shifting). Is the tranny fluid up, and pink?

My cars automatic transmission started to work by itself. I think there may have been a pressure leak or something.
