If you are looking for a solid bumper I would use DOM or at least HREW tubing, maybe .188, pipe is cheap but the thickness varies and it can be brittle. ( as in break easy )
As for the 3/8s channel that could be a little heavy on a light duty wheeler like the Cherokee. ( but of course you know more what you need than I do )
Just thoughts.

having spent numerous hours looking at different options for mounting a front bumper to our machines im thinking it would be A LOT of work to run C-channel for tie in brackets as the front uniframe isnt really straight and theres alot of crap that would get in the way of the channel, an easier route is the already mention plates which ive seen take some serious blows from trees in the bush to F350s on the street.

this give ya an idea of the plates...ignore the red parts as this was long ago when i was still tossin ideas around as ya can see they tie in a decent ways and use pre-existing holes that that also doubles as a steering box brace/support BTW i used 1/4" but that seemed to be standard and happened to be what i had at my disposal

and if your worried bout side to side stress ive seen guys make cross supports for the front mounts but ya gotta keep in mind the cherokee is still a unibody

if ya do figure a route with the c-channel be sure to post pics cause every one is always lookin for mounting options
