Default broke a axle, need d30 upgrade info

was driving my jeep in the Potomac river in about 4 foot of water, i snapped my driver side front axle while doing it, was pretty heavy on the skinny pedal today. i have 35's 4.10's and a arb air locker that was locked when it broke. it sheared off at the u joint.

i know you can upgrade to wrangler shafts but i dont know the specifics.

looking for something stronger so this doesnt happen again, would love to upgrade to chromoly shafts but i dont want to shell out 600 bucks. any info would be greatly appreciated.

its a 95 cherokee with a hp - d30

what was the u-joint that failed, 260 or 297?

If it was the shaft itself that broke I don't think there are any upgrades unless you go aftermarket which you said you can't afford. Please correct em if I'm wrong but I believe all d30 axle shafts are about the same in strength. The only difference is U-joint size, 260 vs 297. And being that yours is a 95 you should have the 297 size U-joints already stock. So basicly your options are smaller tires, aftermarket shafts, or upgrade to a D44 or D60. If it makes you feel any better I broke the driver side shaft in my D30 yesterday too climbing through a canyon, and that was on 33" tires and a welded front diff.

I'm currently band-aiding mine with the below. We'll see how it goes(35's and locker). I also used the 760x joints they sell. For 30 bucks, and 20 bucks for a new big knuckle shaft from the junkyard, I can justify the price.
