Ok, so I was working on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport and I noticed it was leaking oil around this tube, so I decided to try and remove it to see what was going on under there. As I began to tug the elbow completely snapped in half. My questions are.
1) What does this hose do?
2) Can I drive with it in its current condition?
3) What is the exact name for this part?
4) What are the steps to fixing it?
I have done searches for this and looked through my clymer manual but I found nothing.

Im not %100 sure on this but its either the CCV or PCV hose. It collects blowby from the valve cover and sucks it in through the intake. You can drive without it to get where you need to go but don't do it for long or you'll have oil all over

I believe it's one of these pieces, can anyone verify?

I believe it's called a CCV tube? Yes you can drive w/o it just plug the port with something till you can get it fixed so you don't blow oil everywhere.
You have to get a new one, unless you just want to play with the broken one.
This part should be listed in the emissions section of the manual in the exploded diagram.

Ok, thanks, I'll use it to get to NAPA tomorrow. After that I'll park it.

It is supposed to run to the clean air side of the air filter housing. Does it just go into that heat shield for the air filter or does it go into the intake tube? It is hard to Se in the pic. If you want to replace it though, just pry it out and shove the new one in.

You should remove the valve cover if you suspect broken pieces are down in there. If it was running to that open air box, you probably should pull it.

Napa is the place for those. XJ Only identified exactly what is needed.
Open one is in the front. Baffled one is in the rear.
I would say very doubtful, based on the picture, that anything got "inside".
But be careful getting them out. They surely will be brittle.
Good Luck.

So it took awhile but I finally got the piece out, only to find that the elbow that NAPA gave me is wrong, which makes me mad because when he first handed it to me it didn't look right but he assured me it was the right piece. It's also perfect timing for me to not have a jeep because our first snow storm is coming in this week so I can't ride the dual sport and I have no ride to NAPA until the end of the week.
