Default Braking

Stock 89 Limited besides 31.5 tires.

What would it take to get my check to brake like a newer vehicle? I have swapped out everything but the lines to no avail. I use it as my DD and it is just unsafe. Has anyone done this conversion and now able to actually stop quickly by not having to literally stand on the pedal?

Mine has a later model booster, rear discs & 35s. It will throw you thru the windshield if I wanted to.

Technically drums provide better braking when adjusted correctly.
The key word is correctly.

Discs self clean & are so much easier to change.

Booster off a newer G. Cherokee? What year? And I realized like 80 or 90% of the braking power is in the front, so the discs in the back is to the eye of the beholder I suppose. But besides a newer booster is there anything else I can do to get better braking? Something you like on my 2014 Chevy van? Looking for a nice smooth.

Booster alone is the best bang for the buck.

Can you flare brake lines? It isn't bolt in.

I like using the 99 to 2004 Grand cherokee booster and the "guts" from the proportioning valve swapped into the original one.

Aside from the booster as others have mentioned, but sure you're using good pads in the front. I've been really happy with Hawk LTS, but they're not cheap for a street pad. They've got lots of bite and can deal with heat. Not so much for cheap Autozone pads.

Is there a write-up for this? I'm running an 89 as well and my brakes leave a lot to be desired... Not the best in deer crossing country.

Maybe somewhere. I'll walk you through it and you do the write up.

Begin by going to the junkyard and getting the 99 to 2004 brake booster/master WITH the lines from the master.

Do you use the Grand Cherokee master cylinder or do you keep the XJ master cylinder when doing the swap?

Use the GC booster/master/hoses assembly.

That's probably gonna cost a fortune.

The lines coming off the GC master are flexible, making the install much easier as the master has BUBBLE flares and our XJs have DOUBLE FLARES.

Would you still need to swap the proportioning valves if you're only replacing the booster, and otherwise staying with drum brakes?
