Brakes....how much to expect
Hey guys,
I need pads/rotors and calipers on my 97 xj sport.
what should i expect to pay if i have a shop do this? i did my own brakes last time i did them but i used my buddies garage and all his tools, he's not around anymore and i don't have the tools to do this easily. any info would be great. like everybody else right now, money is tight so i'm just trying to go over my options.
thanks

You will save SO much doing it yourself. 1-10 I would give front brakes a 2 for difficulty. I dont know where your location is but if its over 35 degrees outside, I would literally just print out some instructions if you need them and do it in a random parking lot sitting on cardboard. The front caliper takes two I wanna say 10 mm bolts, slide that out, take out the pads, c clamp the caliper so it can accept the new pads, pull the old rotor off, replace with new rotor, tap on caliper loaded with your new pads in it and you are done. We are talking a 20 min job because you dont have to bleed the brakes etc.

Thanks for the reply, I know its a pretty simple job, i just moved on wednesday and am still unpacking, i don't have a jack or stands.
unfortunately i've waited long enough and can hear metal on metal so i'm wanting to take care of it as soon as i can.
anybody in the Indianapolis area that wouldn't mind helping me out and using their garage and or helping me with the job? plenty of free beer for your efforts.

ah I got ya. Ya I am in Chicago but not worth the drive for a brake job. And its better to be safe than sorry and wise of you not to change the brakes with the stock jeep jack. Good luck either way man!

I am telling you man it would be cheaper to just buy a jack and stands and enter an Advance autoparts 30% off coupon and do it yourself.

anyone know of a good write up for brakes? including the swapping out the calipers?
i've done pads and rotors before but never calipers.

Calipers are easy. Only difference is you need to disconnect the soft brake line from it. Once put all back together have someone open the bleeder valve while you pump the brakes a few times, hold the brake down and close the bleeder valve. Start with the passenger side and repeat on the driver side.
