Default brake thump

I put new rotors and brake pads on my 96 Cherokee, and at around 20 miles per hour with foot on brake it goes thump, thump, thump.
I put the old pads and rotors back on and it stopped. I think it is the rotors, but I don't know for sure. Has anyone ever seen pads cause this problem?
I know I could just try the new pads with the old rotors, but did not want to go to that much trouble, unless someone has seen this problems with pads.

Welcome to the forum

it could be just one bad pad or one bad rotor
the easiest way to narrow it down is to replace only the pads or only the rotors

I just got finished changing only the pads, and the thump is gone. So one of the rotors is bad. Thanks.

You changed the pads only and the thump is gone. Wouldn't you conclude that the pad is the problem and not the rotor in that case?

The new-pad thumb: have you 'seated' the new pads by doing a few hard brakings back and forth and at different speeds?
Mine did the same (however were new pads on old rotors for the moment), settled after a while.

No the first time I changed both, and the thump was gone, so when I put only the new pads back on and it did not thump, then the new pads was not the problem.

New pads & rotors thump.

Old pads & rotors back on no thump.

Old rotors left on & the new pads put back on no thump.

Only time the thump was there was when the new rotors was on.

Sorry I was not clear with my post, but this is what I meant.

Curious as to what brand rotors you got that caused the thump?

They were dura last gold from Auto Zone, no problem with Auto Zone, I have got many good rotors there at a low price.

They exchanged them for two new ones for no cost and no hassle.
