Brake rattle

Brake rattle
If I press the brake pedal I feel a rattle in the brake pedal. If I press lightly, I don't feel anything, but the harder I press the more it is there.
It is as if sprockets are there and once the car comes to a halt I can press through, as if the sprockets lock into each other now.
What could it be?
