Looking for some help with a project. I have searched and read most of the threads, posts, and how to's for an XJ rear disc brake conversion. How do I remove c clips and pull axles? How do I remove the spring and aluminum rod from the proportioning valve? My XJ is a 96 classic. I think the rear end is a 30, how do I make sure? Do some ZJ's with the same size rear ends have backing plates that don't require modifying to fit. Whats a fair price for used ZJ backing plates, calipers, proportioning valve, e brake cables, and lines? Thanks,

Look HERE to identify your rear axle.
I found my rear disc setup from a 1996 ZJ on ebay for $130.00. Came with healthy shoes and rotors. The install is on page 2-3 of my build.
The 8.25 axle is easy to work on. Open up the differential housing, drain the gear oil. Remove the bar bin, the gears come out, then the axle slides in to expose the c-clip. After that the axle can come out and you can swap the brakes. The disc backing plate usually has to be clearanced with a rotary tool and grinding wheel.
Leave the proportioning valve alone for the time being. I just removed the plastic plunger to test it a few days ago.
Get a $8 bleed kit from Autozone and a full bottle of brake fluid. Best of luck!

Very handy website to help with what size axle, thanks. That sounds pretty cheap for getting parts on Ebay, I thought shoes only came on drum brakes though. Did you mean healthy calipers, pads, and rotors? Enlarging the hole for the backing plate seems to be no problem, however, before I mess with the axles, I think I need to look at a tear down in my haynes to get a better idea of what I'll be looking at.

Personally, I don't see a disc brake conversion for the rear being a huge advantage over replacing all the stock drum stuff with new.
Easy bolt-on operation.

Yea, after thinking it over, I'm gonna just stick with the stock set up and keep the drums. The emergency brake cable on the drivers side broke though, how can I fix that?
