Default Bolt size question...

What is the exact bolt size (diameter, pitch, length) for the bolts that mount a 5-speed transmission to the transfer case on an older cherokee?

The New Process/New Venture Gear transfer cases seem to use a 3/8" stud with a nut - 3/8"-16 into the case casting, and the mounting end is threaded 3/8"-24. You can use a straight bit of 3/8"-16 threaded rod to make new studs - cut to length, and use 3/8"-16 nuts to retain.

I don't recall the length of the studs offhand - if you find out, could you let me know?

If it's actually a screw, sort out the thread size and pitch (likely SAE,) and the you can calculate the length by measuring the thickness of the flange you're going through, and then adding the nominal diameter of the screw. Use the next longer size, if you are in between sizes (the thumb rule for ideal thread engagement is one diameter - for high strength applications, two diameters. This would not be a high strength application.)

These didn't have studs and threaded into the base of the transmission. This is a feature unique to the manual transmission.

the pic is from my ax-15 (was in there when I got it). It is the same as the ba 10 that came in my 89. The coarse part threads into the transfer case. The fine part goes through the transmission tail housing, and a nut holds them together. I think 5-90 is right about the sizes.

Mine is a pugeot. I think I'll just double check and see if it is a stud. If it is, I'll grab a slightly smaller (grade 8) nut/bolt and crank that thing down.
