Blown Out T-Case
Years ago, I was pulling my 87 YJ behind my truck. Had the T-Case in neutral and the manual transmission in gear as I read to do. After about 100 miles, I heard a loud "explosion" and saw smoke coming out from the jeep. I pulled over and looked under the jeep. The stock T-Case had a hole in the side of it. I'm about to pull my auto transmission XJ to Superlift Park in AR and don't want it to suffer the same fate. What could have possibly went wrong?

Kept it in gear cuz I read that if the TCase was in neutral, all was good. Could the TCase bumped into "drive" possibly?

My guess, having seen it at the dealership numerous times, is that the t-case was not in N as thought because it wasn't verified before pulling away.

We're talking flat towing, right?

Yup flat towing. Afteri thought TCase was in neutral, push it by hand and it rolled, figured it was in N. Maybe not....

You done good, but I always start them before rolling down the road.
The "rolling" just could have been youy were in the transition between N and some other position.......

Embarrassed to say I didn't ck the fluid but will on my next trip. I'll also start it. I read to start it before rolling off, my laziness probably cost me $250 at junk yard. Live and learn. If it's not in N, when u start it, does it start as normal? I'm guessing so it'll just start to roll if I put it in gear and try to go. Hence telling me it's not in N?

Looks like they are saying not to dolly a 4x4 Jeep. Guessing even with the case in neutral, say the front shaft stationary and the rear spinning, will cause it to overheat?
It seems with the front on a dolly and the rear, drive-line out should be fine. I wonder what's handy and fit's neat in the case to keep dust out and fluid in?
