I don't mean to pester but shafts? I don't doubt the person's experience but I have learned with old school mechanics.....with experience comes assumptions rather than diagnosis...
I don't know your level of mechanical skill but I assume you can do an oil change? Pull the oil filter off and cut it open. Use gloves and metal snips. Look for any kind of metal in the filter element or oil in the filter.

yes i can lol just not the guy able to put the motor back together the way it should and yes u really cant tell till u take it apart to see what broke
I hate taking my car to the shop for this reason... sometimes when I've taken cars into places that gave me the best price, I've had other issues arise.
I had a 2006 Chevy Malibu, I took it in for an oil change at a dealer in Wayne, MI where I bought it. I started talking with this black dude behind the counter about car audio. Next thing I know the torque converter goes at 40k. Then later in the spring, the catalytic converter is suddenly clogged.

Just checking while remaining respectful. Better to diagnose the real problem before replacing something that might not need to be replaced.

If there was a thrown rod you have no oil pressure, the only thing in the oil pan is oil, the oil pump pick up, and the bottom half of the crankshaft. My money is still on a busted flex plate, who would like some of this action?

The engine is metal. Vibrations and noises can be transmitted though metal.
It sounds like you have already made up your mind for what you are going to do, which is to pull out the engine.... how come you are asking us what we would do if you aren't going to listen?
