My ex Forest Servie XJ (109K) had black, muddy/watery fluid when I bought it.
Fleet maintenance my
.
Dropped the pan (glop glop glop) changed fluid.
Changed the fluid twice more in 3000 miles and it was finally nice and red.
It's been 3 1/2 years and several fluid changes without issue (157K).
Even dropped the pan again recently to check things out. Nothing on my magnet in there, and nothing but nice red fluid inside
The grease and grime isn't always "the only thing keeping it together" lol.

I'm guessing that the aw4 is tough..... My friend that works at the dodge dealer sez that if you did that in a intrepid for instance it would not move afterward or lose reverse.

I did a WYNNS Trans flush done and it made a world of difference. I used wynns synthetic fluid too. The wynns machine hooks in to 1 line and does a 99% fluid exchange with the truck running. If you have access to 1 it's awesome.
