Haha I don't want to put the effort in to go find a study. I am going off of what 20+ year mechanics and master mechanics have experienced in various shops. It wasn't one person trying to screw with me. It was multiple people with lots of years of experience all telling me the same thing.

How about this for any of your wanting to spend money on a brand new car and get more horse power than you will ever need and still get 67 miles to the gallon.... oh and do 217 mph!

Not a big fan of science, are you?
Have you ever heard the term, "anecdotal evidence"?

Geeze I must be Cherokee forum kryptonite. One funny post and I killed the thread!
And I'm still looking for that memo. Or are you pulling my leg?

What goes wrong with those 01 VW trans? Lady has one and its great. Had the fluid swapped at 70K for the transmission and it shifts great. Anything to help it? 12 Hours from Denver to Tucson took me just over a tank of gas. WTF!

Well I'm a Freemason so automatically I'm in the Illuminati ( so I'm told by all the experts). And I'm a Shriner. No I don't drive a funny little car wear clown makeup or funny curled shoes. But I do play in the trumpet band!.
Back on topic. (Bummer)
Anything that you do to a Cherokee that is not in line with keeping it bone stock and in perfect tune will cause you lower than original gas milage.
Remember the fuel we use nowadays has considerable less BTU's than it was years ago. If we could only get the higher octane numbers we were used to in the 60's and 70's we could bump up our compression. Combined with the leaner burn we have with todays computerized ignition we'd see much better numbers milage wise.

Seems the "MT-01" automatics last only slightly longer than timing belts lol
