Try putting down the crack pipe before giving any kind of advice!!!! No one in there right mind would think this is the right thing to do. DON"T GIVE ADVICE IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!

I have heard numerous master techs give this advice. They have also done a scientific study. Like I said, they had mpg's drop when they put in a new air filter a couple times. Not on crack, and it was proven.

Not to burst your bubble, but the throttle plate is what causes intake tract restriction and hence vacuum, unless you're driving all the time at WOT, not the air filter.

17MPG is almost exactly right at the overall factory rating. So yeah I guese you might squeeze another 2mpgs out of it and get to the top end of the 16-19 mpg factory rating.

What is a "factory rating" as it relates to fuel mileage?

OP's numbers are like-new. Pretty good for a 14-year-old vehicle!

Oh well ok then, it was proven; well I'm off to throw some dirt, leaves and anything else I can find into my air filter.

Improved MPGs here I come!!!

Unhappy

Hi all!!

Well I get 13.8 average:

It runs stock tyres; 225/75 R15 and is a 98 4.0 Auto 4x4.

I wonder why? Lots of others on Fuelly are getting low teens too

Dammit! Gas is US$1.98/ litre = US$7.92/ US gallon.

Makes for expensive running!!!!!!!!!

HELP

There are more things you can do but I remember a couple more that might help. Install lockers in the axles and remove the mechanical fan and install an electrical fan. You'll only get a few mpg's more but if you have the money and want to try then go for it.
